LEARN TO SKATE/FIGURE SKATING

ARE YOU INTERESTED IN LEARNING TO ICE SKATE?
IF SO, YOU'RE IN THE RIGHT PLACE!

What does Nancy Kerrigan, Michelle Kwan, and Ashley Wagner all have
in common? They all started their figure skating careers in their local ice
skating programs. All Olympic dreams begin with a successful local program...Medford is celebrating its 37th season!

37 years ago, Roberta Bailey, a Medford resident that skated professionally in the
Ice Capades, implemented this program for Medford Rec. Hockey Assoc. with the
help of then President, Bob Taddeo. Also on board for the past 37 years is figure
skating instructor, Maureen DiBiaso of Everett. The program was a first of a kind
in the area and a huge success for Medford Rec. Hockey Assoc. More than 3,500 skaters have passed through the LoConte ice rink doors each and every Saturday morning from mid-October to mid-March since the first season in 1987.

Most of our skaters enjoyed the fun aspects of ice skating and learned the basic
skating skills well enough to be able to skate just for pleasure. After learning strong skating skills, many skaters turned in their figure skates for hockey skates and have had much success in the hockey arena. Then there were the others that truly loved the sport of figure skating and went on to private lessons and became serious figure skaters. Here is the current list of accomplishments achieved by some of the Medford Rec. Hockey Assoc. figure skaters over the past 37 years.

Skaters have gone on to become New England Regional Championships Medalists, Eastern Regional Competitors, United States Junior National Alternates, United States National Competitors. United States National Collegiate Champions in Synchronized Skating. United States National Gold Medalists, United States World Team Members, United States Gold Medalists in Ice Dance, Moves in the Field and Free Skating. Many have gone on to become Figure Skating Professionals teaching our next generation of ice skaters.
Others have taken their special talents to the cast of Disney on Ice. Kyleigh Gaff is now at the United States Figure Skating Assoc., located in Colorado Springs, where she is the Director of High Performance for our country!  Congrats Kyleigh.
